Art exhibition with a big difference

ArtsCape in Wynyard hosts many diverse art exhibitions, but the WordPlaying exhibiton launching on Friday 6th September at 6:30 pm is all about words.

WordPLayers is a local writing group which has been active since 2007, but this is the first exhibition the members have put on. The group has produced several anthologies which are given out for free amongst the community, but the co-ordinator Rees Campbell thought the group were well placed to show the community the art of words.

The opening of the exhibition will feature words in many dimensions. There will be your normal launch speaker, this time it is Craig Garland, newly elected independent Braddon MP.  There will also be the spoken word with performance poems being presented by Corey Speers and Rees Campbell.

There are many static pieces hanging on the walls featuring both poetry and prose; but some will be in colour, some will have photos and graphics illustrating them, some will be more “art” than words. Each of the 13 WordPlayers members currently active will be represented by at least one static piece.

The final word-slaught will be in a zine available for visitors. This is an anthology of self-selected pieces by WordPlayers members collated into a free –form zine. Again, all current active WordPlayers members are represented in the colourful, eclectic zine.

One of the group’s members, creative artisan Merv Mitchell has made a working model of the Gutenburg printing press. These presses were used in the 1400’s throughout Europe, transforming the way books were made. The press, and a few printings from it will be on display at the exhibition.

Other wordy attractions will be natural art featuring letters, antique samplers, alphabet biscuits and bunting made from thesaurus pages. The exhibition will exemplify the quote by Jean Baptiste Girard “ By words we learn thoughts, and by thoughts we learn life.”

Everyone is welcome to the launch on Friday 6th September from 6:30 pm, and the exhibition will be open to the public from 10-2 each day from Saturday 7th to Saturday 14th September.
