Waratah-Wynyard Council Update
Tulip Festival
What a fantastic event! Huge crowds, lots to see and do: the rides, live music, great food, games, meeting Hannah Moloney, the beautiful products, and of course, the fireworks! There was an estimated 20,000 people who attended, the sunshine helped of course…

Coastal Pathway Opening:
It was estimated that 250 people attended the event recently.
The highly anticipated $15.72m Shared Coastal Pathway that runs for 13.2km between
Wynyard and Burnie was officially opened today by Tasmanian Government Minister and
Member for Braddon Roger Jaensch.
The opening ceremony was held at Anzac Park in Somerset and attracted over 250
community members, including organised groups of more than 60 cyclists who rode together
from Burnie and also from Wynyard.
Construction of the project commenced in September 2023 and was made possible with
$13.86m in funding from the Tasmanian State Government and $1.86m collectively from the
Waratah-Wynyard Council and Burnie City Council.
Waratah-Wynyard Mayor Mary Duniam said the Coastal Pathway will bring strong regional
benefits, both for locals and visitors alike.
“This is an investment that aligns deeply with our environmental, community and health and
well-being goals, making use of one of our most enduring and attractive assets—our
coastline.”
Burnie City Council Mayor Teeny Brumby said the Coastal Pathway will deliver immense
benefits.
“The beauty of this project is not just in its physical infrastructure but in the way it has
brought our community together—encouraging people to get active, connect with nature,
and with each other. The benefits of being outdoors, engaging in physical activity, and
building those personal connections are invaluable to the wellbeing of our region.
“I would especially like to acknowledge Keith Price, who has been a tireless advocate for this
project from the very beginning. For more than twenty years, Keith has worked passionately
to see this pathway come to life, and today marks not only a significant milestone for the
region but also a deeply personal achievement for him,” Mayor Brumby said.
Mr Price, who led the contingent of cyclists who rode to the opening from Burnie, said the
Coastal Pathway provided cyclists with a safe way to enjoy riding.
Boat Harbour Master Plan
Boat Harbour Beach Master Plan – commencement date is set!
NEXT WEEK the collaborative project between Council, the Community, Boat Harbour Beach Surf Life Saving Club (BHBSLSC), the working group and local businesses is set to commence November 5th.
Pictured is Deputy Mayor Celisa Edwards, BHBSLSC members Graeme Fairbrother and Ally Mac, Seekers Bar & Cafe owner Sarah Myers and local resident and working group member, Deryl Dowling.
The group expressed enthusiasm for this project coming to fruition after years of consultation and planning. The community will receive a state-of-the-art Surf Life Saving Club, community centre with gym and upgraded public amenities. The Master Plan will also address longstanding issues around parking, stormwater management, and pedestrian safety.
Seekers owner Sarah shared that she is looking forward to the new building—where she will have a new kitchen and a bigger space to expand her cafe.
While the project is estimated to take 12-18 months to complete, the beach and Seeker’s Bar & Cafe WILL remain open. (Please follow Seekers Bar & Café Boat Harbour Beach for their summer hours.)
Council will update the public with parking and beach access information throughout the entire project. Please follow along to stay updated!

2024 Try Skills Report
Waratah-Wynyard Council offered the annual Try Skills program in October this year during the school holidays break. The aim of the program was to encourage active participation by young people in activities in the Waratah-Wynyard area. It was open to all young people from grades five, six and seven, regardless of where they live.
This year we had volunteers from the following 12 clubs/groups:
- Artscape
- Burnie Archery Club
- Wynyard Somerset Tennis Club
- Samurai Ju Jitsu
- Shim Jang Taekwondo
- Van Diemen’s Swordfighting Association
- Girl Guides
- Wynyard Squash Racquets Association
- Wynyard Fitness
- Farm it Forward
- Big hArt
- Fisheries Engagement (Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania)
Overall, Try Skills had 68 students from the municipality participate, 14 more than last year. Seven of the activities were at maximum capacity and some students unfortunately missed out due to the popular demands. Most of the groups reported having larger groups compared with previous experiences. In particular, the Wynyard Squash club reported that their sessions were hugely successful, so much so that they have implemented weekly junior clinics.
