Community Trading Event

Community trading is based on exchanging goods and services without using money. The Community Exchange Network Tasmania (CENTs) project is auspiced by Live Well Tasmania, and uses the SIMBI platform. The much anticipated in person CENTs / SIMBI Trade Day is nearly upon us and we’re welcoming all current and past traders to join us at this free community gathering.

Community Change Makers – Robin Krabbe and Tania Brookes will be sharing some community currency insights through a permaculture lens and we invite you to bring your goods and services and a plate to share for community lunch. Whatever is in abundance at your place is a great place to start!

The RESEED Centre (30 King Edward Street, Penguin) will be welcoming us into their community space.  CENTs are offering 50 simbis (one Simbi is equal to one dollar) to all attendees so you can start trading straight away. We love creating our own stimulus package with community currency.

The cost of living is rising and we are all looking for ways to meet some of our needs to free up money for those pesky bills that keep going up year on year. Come along to find out how you can do that! Here are examples of services you can provide and receive without using money:

Social Activation (SAP) Youth Team: Tech Workshops

SAP is back! Our youth team gained a small Get Online Week grant from Good Things Australia to deliver two free workshops in October. The first one, on the 20th of October is for those who are seeking basic skills in using technology. The second is a more advanced course on the 22nd of October? Did you know that Generative AI can produce text, images, music, video, computer code and even help design projects? Find out how you can use Artificial Intelligence in your day to day life. Both of these will be at the Live Well Tasmania Community Centre. RSVP to Kalani via email [email protected]

Live Well Tasmania Stalls

Come and see us at two other events in October, firstly we will have a stall at the Wellways Annual Dog Walk and Lunch, on the 18th of October at Anzac Park in Somerset. This event aims to support mental health, while celebrating our four legged friends! We will also have a stall at the Wynyard Wellness Expo

“Get Inspired” to be held at the Wynyard Yacht Club on the 25th of October, 10am to 3pm. This will be a day dedicated to exploring a range of wellness topics such as naturopathy, nutrition, movement, wellness products, stress management, and healthy eating.

Live Well  and Wynyard High School Community Garden

The Live Well Tasmania and Wynyard High School Horticulture Community Garden volunteers have certainly been busy this year!

Our Monday morning volunteers have continued to grow, harvest and prepare fresh produce, with donations being delivered to the ROC Food Hub each week. It is wonderful to see produce grown in our community garden making its way back into the local community. There is plenty happening in preparation for the warmer months, with many seedlings now growing strongly and ready for summer planting and future harvests.

One of our biggest achievements this year has been the construction of our new shade house, complete with a newly installed irrigation system. This will provide another valuable growing and propagation space and allow us to expand what we can produce throughout the year. A very special thank you goes to Mark, Andrew and Red for their ongoing support, practical help and contribution to the garden with their hard work and knowledge. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.

We are also pleased to see Grant continuing to develop his horticultural skills while completing his Certificate III in Horticulture, with TAFE trainers attending our site to support his training. It is fantastic to have learning, volunteering and community participation all happening together in the garden. Throughout the week, Wynyard High School Horticulture students continue the good work, helping with propagation, planting, garden maintenance and other horticultural projects.

And, of course, new volunteers are always welcome!  Come along and join us on Mondays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. No special horticultural experience is needed just an interest in gardening, meeting people and being part of a welcoming community.

Coffee usually arrives around 10:30 am, so there is always time for a cuppa and a chat! Everyone is welcome.
