Rambling Reveries by Karen Ashworth-Eck
Sing Along
In every culture, time and land,
there has been singing, hand in hand.
Voices raised in joy or sorrow,
moving hearts into tomorrow …
Something special happens when we sing together – it’s as if the air itself begins to shimmer. Science calls this ‘entrainment’, where our bones, muscles, and even our cells vibrate in harmony with the music and the group. Together, we create a shared field of energy that uplifts, heals, and connects us– physically, emotionally, and socially.
Endorphins rise, cortisol drops, and we feel lighter and more at ease. Our lungs expand; our bodies grow stronger, and our minds clear as antibodies rise and our prefrontal cortex is stimulated. Even pain seems to soften when voices unite. Group singing turns strangers into friends and silence into songs.
Here in our community, you don’t need to be a performer to enjoy the benefits of group singing. A Gathering of Voices is a welcoming, non-performance-based singing group that meets every Tuesday at 6.30pm at the old Cricket Club in Wynyard (entry $10). There’s no need to commit to singing or attend every session – feel free to simply come along, listen, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. You’re welcome to join in whenever you’re ready or just soak up the music and the company.
And for a special event, don’t miss the pop-up Shed Choir in The Don, happening as part of Permission to Trespass 2025 on Friday the 11 July. You can book your spot through Eventbrite. This event is open to everyone – no singing skills needed – and there’s even a bar service available to help you relax and enjoy the experience. Discover how singing together can lift your spirits, connect you with others, and make every day a little brighter.
May wings of music light the way,
awaken joy that longs to play
