Rambling Reveries by Karen Ashworth-Eck
Springing into Diversity

See how they gather,
so tight yet so untamed,
composed of countless faces yet…
not one of them the same.
See how their ancient candle
holds all in one embrace,so rich in possibility,
so formed through nature’s grace.
To stand before a banksia is to witness nature’s profound commitment to flourishing through diversity, generation after generation. In one of the world’s oldest and harshest soils, the ancient genus has adapted across the continent, sending forth wildly individual species that thrive from rocky alpine ridges to coastal scrub and sandy plains. Each banksia bears its own signature – leaves that are serrated or smooth, flower spikes ablaze in gold, orange, crimson or green. They take every shape imaginable, ranging from delicate groundcovers to tall, sculptured trees: living proof that beauty and resilience arise not from uniformity, but from a bold exuberance of difference – a mirror for our community.
